Like many good stories, ours begins once upon a time... more than a hundred years ago, in fact!

Our roots lie in Mentone Public Library, founded back in 1925 after a couple of false starts. For a century it served the people of Mentone and beyond, and you can read more about its rich and at times checkered history here.

By 2025, as we celebrated our centenary, while our book-lending wasn't very popular, our meet-the-author sessions, our courses and our writing competitions were very well attended . And so the decision was made to focus on what the community was asking for - hence our new identity as Kingston Writers Centre.

We are profoundly grateful to all the many, many volunteers who, over the years, have made Mentone Public Library a beloved, if somewhat quirkly, local operation. And we honour their work every day as we help the people of Kingston find their creative voice.
