Kingston Writers Centre
2026 Writing Awards

Writing With Pen

Our first Annual Writing Awards start right here, right now - with you.

You can write fiction, non-fiction or poetry. We have three prose categories:

12-15 years old (500 words) - prize $250

16-18 years old (1,000 words) - prize $500

19 years old and above (1,500 words) - prize $500

We also have a poetry category:

Poetry (50 lines and under), open to any age - prize $500.

In addition The Johnstone Family Award will be given to one of our winners, with an additional $250 in prize money.

Our theme for 2026 is hope.

Write prose (fiction, non-fiction, memoir) or a poem using hope as the theme. Hope means something different to everyone: explore it as you choose. You don’t have to use the word in your writing, but we do want to see where it connects with hope. You’re the writer! Surprise us.

How to enter (and the boring bits)

First off, you need to be a member of Kingston Writers Centre to take part. It’s only $10 (free for 15 year olds and under), and that gets you early bird access and discounts to our events. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works, studies or plays in Kingston. Or visits. (We're not going to be checking up on you.)

To join Kingston Writers Centre, click here or on the "Join now" button at the top of this page.

Once you’ve signed up, it’s time to submit your entry: click here.

And then? Well, then it's up to our panel of judges who'll have the difficult task of working out who are our winners. We wish you the very best of luck!
